Sydney Telstra 500
V8 Supercars has commenced the 30-day countdown to Sydney’s largest-ever motorsport event – the Sydney Telstra 500.
V8 Supercars Australia has ramped up its exposure in the Harbour City, preparing the city for a festival of “Rock and Race” to be held on December 4-6 at Sydney Olympic Park.
Over the next month the Sydney Telstra 500 will boast an ever-growing presence in Australia’s largest city, with Sydney Telstra 500 colour to be seen throughout the iconic Australian city over the coming weeks.
In an entertainment coup Aussie rock greats Cold Chisel will re-unite for a special one show only Saturday night concert at the event.
The Saturday evening concert entertainment will rock Olympic Park, featuring a night of headlining performances from punk rockers the Living End and post-grunge band Grinspoon, and ending with the one-off hit after hit not to missed concert by Cold Chisel.
The Friday evening concert after the race line up includes performances by Australia’s hottest dance music sensations The Presets, Sneaky Sound System and The Potbelleez.
As part of the preparations for the Sydney Telstra 500, Ford Performance Racing driver Mark Winterbottom returned to his hometown and to take part in a V8 Supersafe presentation at MLC Girls’ School.
While in Sydney, he was able to witness V8 Supercar’s increased presence in the city in readiness for the December 4-6 event, now only 30 days away. It includes his car being permanently on display at the entrance to Sydney Airport where tens of thousands of cars pass each day (see attached picture – more available on request).
“I never dreamed growing up in Sydney as a young karter that my car would be sitting in front of Sydney Airport with my name plastered all over it,” Winterbottom said.
“It’s quite surreal actually. To think the sport has come this far in a relatively small period of time is quite mind-blowing. For us as drivers it’s been incredible to become household names around the country and this Sydney event will only elevate the sport even more.”
While Winterbottom was born and raised in Sydney, he now resides in Melbourne where his Ford Performance Racing team is based.
“I think Sydney is really going to embrace the Sydney Telstra 500. Personally, it’s great to be back in my hometown where I was born and bred and I’ll be proud to race through the streets of Sydney Olympic Park in just 30 days time,” said Winterbottom.
“Sydney has long needed an iconic motorsport event and I think the Sydney Telstra 500 will fill that void. After seeing the Sydney Olympic Park facility prepare for the Sydney Telstra 500, I feel this event is going to be great.
“It’s great to book-end the season with two impressive street races – the Clipsal 500 and the Sydney Telstra 500. I have no doubt the Sydney Olympic Park event will become one of the biggest sporting occasions of the year.”
The Sydney Telstra 500 is the final event of the 2009 V8 Supercar Championship Series. The two remaining events will be held this weekend for The Island 300 at Phillip Island (November 7-8) and Perth’s BigPond 300 on November 20-22.
The Sydney Telstra 500 runs from 4-6 December 2009, with three action-packed days of racing and entertainment for all ages. Play during the day and party at night with concerts on Friday and Saturday all included in your same day ticket price (from $48) –
