The Impact of Load Transfer on Your Vehicle

Have you ever wondered what happens when you drive a loaded car, tow a loaded trailer or caravan? Well this section of our website aims to demonstrate exactly what happens and the impact that it has on your car.

Basic Load Transfer Scenario’s
“A” - Loaded Over Centre of Gravity
“B” - Loaded Over The Rear Axle
“C” - Loaded Past Axle (Towing)

Position “A” - Loaded over Centre of Gravity
• Vehicles balance is maintained reasonably well
• Centre of Gravity has not moved forward or rearward but may have fallen or risen.
–This alters the Roll, Yaw and Pitch axis as well as the Roll Moment.
• Common complaints
–Excess body roll during corners - spring/shock rates not suitable
–Increased body pitch under brakes - spring/shock rates not suitable
  –Reduced ground clearance
–Rapid tyre wear - alignment angles change with load
–Harsh ride - vehicle is bottoming out

Position “B” - Loaded Over The Rear Axle

• Vehicles balance is Upset
• Centre of Gravity has moved rearward and fallen or risen.
–This alters the Roll, Yaw and Pitch axis as well as the Roll Moment
  –Dramatically effects Understeer/Oversteer characteristics
• Common complaints
–Increased body roll during corners - spring/shock rates not suitable
• Rear end tends to wallow
–Reduced ground clearance in rear -towbar scrapes
–Head lights are in the trees
–Rapid rear tyre wear - alignment angles changed & tyre pressure too low
–Harsh ride - vehicle is bottoming out in rear
  –Poor Steering response/wandering

Position “C” - Loaded past Axle (Towing)
• Vehicles balance is greatly Upset
• Centre of Gravity has moved rearward and may have fallen.
–This alters the Roll, Yaw and Pitch axis’s as well as the Roll Moment.
–Front of vehicle has risen (Engine Weight)
  –Dramatically effects Understeer/Oversteer characteristics
• Common complaints
–Increased body roll during corners - spring/shock rates not suitable
• Rear end tends to wallow
–Reduced ground clearance in rear -towbar scrapes
–Head lights point to the moon
–Rapid tyre wear - alignment angles changed, tyre pressure
–Harsh ride - vehicle is bottoming out in rear
  –Poor Steering response/wandering
